In keeping with established tradition of offering educational opportunities to our membership, as well as the metal finishing community, the New England Chapter once again was pleased to offer a Wastewater Continuing Education Webinar. The event took place on Wednesday September 16, 2026 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. This educational webinar was offered at no charge to NENASF members as a benefit of Chapter membership. The Zoom format facilitates a larger pool of speakers from which to draw plus a larger audience in comparison with an in-person event requiring travel to attend. Over forty attendees from the metal finishing community partook of this presentation.

This year, as in the past, the program was comprised of three speakers offering vital technical and regulatory compliance information key to the metal finishing community. All attendees were eligible for two Wastewater Continuing Education Contact Hours as awarded by the Mass DEP.

Starting the Webinar was Adam Blakely, SURCON Product Line Manager from MacDermid-Enthone who gave a presentation on proper cleaning as the key component to successful finishing and, indirectly, compliance results. He stressed that good cleaners, when operated incorrectly, can perform poorly.

This was followed with a presentation by Ted Antonellis, Lab and Plating Operations Manager from Hubbard-Hall, who discussed some of the intricacies and challenges of Black Oxide finishing. His talk included reference to many types of post treatment seal coatings as well as maintenance and troubleshooting techniques leading to good finished products and ease of wastewater treatment.

The Webinar concluded with a presentation from Shamus Keohane and Dlyan Eberie of Geosyntec Consultants whose two-part presentation covered the current PFAS regulatory climate, which is heavily targeting metal finishers, and also stressed the necessity of having a plan to address data collection and source research conducted for when regulations do go into effect. They pointed out the increasing availability of PLL Insurance that wasn’t recently an option.

Many thanks to our presenters for their time and expertise offered in an effort to enhance the knowledge and awareness of the metal finishing community, and especially to the dedicated NENASF members who work so hard to make educational events like this possible.
