In conjunction with NASF and as part of a grant from U.S. EPA Region V, the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) has sent a pollution prevention (P2) benchmarking survey to NASF job shop members. This project will provide valuable information for the surface finishing industry. The response to the survey has to date has been lower than expected, and we would like more responses to enhance the statistically reliability of the project. We are reaching out to you members of your Chapter who have not yet submitted a survey to participate in this effort and submit a survey response.
Companies should have received a hard copy of the survey in the mail. If companies do not have any record of receiving the survey, we can provide another copy or they may be able to complete it on-line at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/metalfinishingsurvey. Companies responding to this survey will receive a free copy of Pollution Prevention and Control Technologies for Plating Operations, second edition. This book have been sold world-wide and it is generally considered the most comprehensive text for this subject.

Members of the NASF New England Chapter were given the opportunity to learn the latest wastewater treatment technologies while fulfilling mandatory triennial Dot Hazmat and annual RCRA hazardous waste handling training at a four hour seminar offered for this training from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on February 9, 2017 at the Holiday Inn in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
David Joyce, wastewater treatment expert from Hubbard-Hall, gave the attendees a look at some emerging technologies when he addressed possible future uses for little known Zeolites and Chitosans as an aid in resolving some difficult wastewater treatment problems.
Jeff Mosholder of New Path LLC was the moderator and primary instructor of the seminar. He, along with Travis Porter and Max Forsythe from ENPRO Environmental, educated attendees on the many complex rules and regulations in place when handling hazardous materials and properly offering hazardous wastes for removal from a metal finishing facility.
A test was administered after the training session and certificates of completion were distributed to all who successfully completed the course and passed the test.
Educational opportunities as seen in this seminar are just one of the many benefits of membership in a local organization like NENASF with strong national ties through the NASF.

Latest Chrome Air Regulations:
These new lower limits are a result of our industry already doing a good job with existing regulations; regulators took note and concluded the limits should be much lower. Even at that, these new lower limits can be achieved with the use of current technology fume suppressants. Problems arise because our government has banned the use of PFOS fume suppressants as of September 2015. Replacement fume suppressants will lower surface tension but not emissions, so this is a huge fight that NASF is waging on behalf of our membership.
Legislation has just passed allowing a third party union representative to accompany an OSHA inspector into your building during an OSHA inspection, even if you are a non-union shop. NASF is fighting against this policy for our members.

This is a good thing! NASF can help get you up to speed on complying with this complex issue.
RCRA Industrial Wipes:
NASF was instrumental in getting solvent contaminated industrial wipes excluded from regulation as a hazardous waste.
Electroless nickel has recently become regulated by the Federal Drug Administration, as the sodium hypophosphite in your EN bath can be used in making illicit drugs. So far, it is only impacting manufacturers, but NASF is carefully watching to make sure it doesn’t spread to the metal finishing community at large.
